Hermes, baby

No, not that Hermès, but the Swiss-made typewriter: the Hermes Baby.

I’ve never used it — in fact, I’m not even sure the ribbon has ink — but I find the idea of a typewriter so romantic.

The best novels, after all, were written on one.

  • Ooh I so agree, it’s so romantic that idea of the starving writer typing into the night on a typewriter, wine and burning candle by your side haha

  • Do you know about Letter Writing Club at The Regional Assembly of Text on Main St? (You’re in Vancouver, yes?) It’s awesome! First Thursday of the month, you go in and they have working typewriters set up all over the store, stationary and rubber stamps to use, and cookies and lemonade to enjoy. And all for free! Brilliant.

  • MizzJ — I’d be so terrified to find out how terrible my spelling would be on a typewriter. Those things don’t come with spellcheck.

Terra — Brilliant! I love the Regional Assembly of Text (it’s the kind of shop I’d love to have if I were to ever own a shop) but haven’t yet been to the Letter Writing Club. Thank you for reminding me!

  • I solely agree! There’s something sooo romantic about a typewriter such as yours! It makes me want to buy one and write a novel !!!:)
    p.s. ( I wish!)

  • and this black ball upon the books?
    lovely, looks like a sculpture…..

  • Is this your photograph? I’ve noticed your fashion ones are mysterious and classical.

I am a writer/filmmaker and really want to finish my novel on a typewriter… but a) the save function and re-writing an entire page after one error and…. b) I wonder if my fingers are used to the soft keyboard now.

They are incredibly fetching though and exude “writerliness”.

  • What a wonderful find!

  • Clarity — yes, those are my photographs (most on the site are) and I know what you mean about being used to writing on a soft keyboard.

Talk to me!
