woman2warrior, May 25th at Swangard Stadium!

For the past few years I’ve been a host on Timmy’s Telethon benefitting BC Easter Seals Camps. This year, I’m working with Easter Seals on their newest fundraiser — woman2warrior.

It’s a 5km obstacle race for women of all ages and fitness levels.

I figure you could go for brunch with your girlfriends that Sunday morning. Or you could get muddy for a good cause.

Plus there are mimosas at the finish line. So grab your girlfriends and join us on May 25th at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium and follow along as we share training tips, fundraising ideas and a little pinspiration (pictured above) on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

P.S. We’re looking for vendors and sponsors to make this year’s finishers’ area even bigger and better than last year. Want to help? Please contact info@woman2warrior.ca

Diary | Timmy’s Telethon

Some things are just meant to be. Like when I show up at the studio in a green dress and my Timmy’s Telethon Social Media Desk co-host Bianca Solterbeck is wearing a red one. We didn’t plan it. I swear.

What we did plan was to raise a ton of money. $5.3 million, to be exact, for the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities. And I am so honoured to have been involved. Thanks for having me for a second year, Timmy’s Telethon! And an even bigger thank you to everyone who donated!

Style | Maiden Nation Bracelets

I love a shopping site with a twist. Almost as much as I love bracelets with a twist.

Maiden Nation is the virtual home of ethically sourced jewelry — just bracelets at the moment — from women designers all over the world. My favourites? The Moño Cuff by Buenos Aires-based designer Fernanda Sibilia (pictured at the top) and the Ouroboros Bracelets from India (above).

Profits from the sale of this arm candy are reinvested in women’s entrepreneur programs. Which means you’ll be doing good with a flick of your wrist.

Thanks, Sabrina, for bringing it to my attention!

Beauty | Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Holiday 2012

I am a big, big fan of Kiehl’s. Especially their Rare Earth collection. When Sharifa of The Salon Beauty Bar did my makeup for Timmy’s Telethon, we were raving about their Rare Earth Deep Poor Cleanser — so good for gentle exfoliation in the winter. But cleanser isn’t exactly the most glamourous gift (unless you’re giving it to yourself, duh).

Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Whipped Body Butter, on the other hand, is. Wrapped in the work of New York-based artist Kenny Scharf, all proceeds from the Canadian sales of the Holiday 2012 collection support local pediatric oncology camps.

So you’re giving twice. Three times if you get yourself the cleanser.

Diary | Thank you, Timmy’s Telethon!

Well this is a feel-good story.

Last night, I co-hosted the social media desk at Timmy’s Telethon with Shaw TV’s Bianca Solterbeck. And man, was it fun. (Thanks, team Timmy’s, for letting me get involved!) But that’s not the best part. The best part is that over the course of the evening, British Columbia and the Yukon raised $6,118,620 for the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities.

My night started when the mobile makeup team from The Salon Beauty Bar turned my kitchen into a green room. (Thanks, guys!) It’s a newish service offered by makeup artists Angela and Sharifa (pictured) who will come to your home — provided it’s in Vancouver — and get you ready for a holiday party, wedding…

…or telethon. (Yes! Dramatic brows!)

Then I headed to Shaw Tower where I joined the madness on set. How many people were there on the phones, in the greenroom, in the producer’s studio? I have no idea but it felt like hundreds.

I took my place behind the social media desk with a running shoe-wearing Bianca (thank you, Instagrammers, for pointing that out!). That’s producer Peter Verge giving us talking points on the left and on the right: my friend and fellow blogette Alicia Quan, who was operating the tweet machine.

The stories we got to share blew me away. As did the donations that were pouring in. Six million bucks will go a long way to funding the important work of the BC Lions Society.

This verrrry serious crew? They were just on the social media side of things. I can’t even tell you how many people it took to pull this whole thing together (I had it easy — I just had to show up and talk). Thanks a million, team Timmy’s, BC Lions Society, Erin Shaw and Melanie Pineda, for having me!

P.S. Speaking of social media, follow The Anthology on Facebook and Twitter.

Timmy’s Telethon on Sunday, Dec. 9

What are you doing Sunday, December 9th? Watching Timmy’s Telethon? (So is my mom!) It’s going to be a party and you’re invited.

I’ll be joining a whole host of hosts including Michael Eckford and Fiona Forbes of the Rush, Global BC’s Chris Gailus and Sophie Lui, and man about town Fred Lee. I’ll be on from 8:00-10:00pm (and I’ll be watching your tweets so holler @TheAnthology and get hashtag happy with #TimmysTelethon).

The Telethon benefits the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities, which assists children with all kinds of special needs. The event raised more than $6 million last year and this year, with your help, we hope to beat that.

Thank you BC Lions Society, Timmy’s Telethon and especially you, Melanie, for inviting me to take part!

My One Thing

The gym. Blech. I wish the thought of pumping iron got my blood pumping, but it just doesn’t. (Don’t tell my membership card I said that.) Still, I know I need to exercise for a million reasons – health, sanity, you name it – so when the Canadian Cancer Society asked me to share my “one thing” I thought long and hard and then I wrote this.

Home | Spark Change with Sir Elton John’s New Candles at Holt Renfew

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed about The Anthology’s Workspace feature it’s this: the creative creatures we’ve featured have sweet-smelling creative spaces. In Kumiko Ide‘s case it’s thanks to fresh-cut flowers but in Anya Georgijevic and Niki Blasina‘s cases it’s thanks to scented candles.

Speaking of the latter, Sir Elton John, David Furnish and NEST have just created a collection of scented candles for Holt Renfrew ($50 each), with a portion of proceeds going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Available in two scents — the floral Jardin de Fleurs, and the citrus L’Orangerie, they’re available now at holtrenfrew.com, and on September 8th in Holt Renfrew stores across Canada.

Your desk — and the Elton John AIDS Foundation — will thank you.

Art & Design | Marlowe by Cindy Hughes

Cat pictures, people. They make the world wide web go round.

This one of shelter kitty Marlowe is part of a project that captures the beautiful, quirky faces of animals in need of homes. When they’re willing to sit for the camera, that is. “We have a lot of photos of cats running away from us,” said Lisa Brideau, the volunteer who started the project. Her hope? That potential adopters will fall in love with the photogenic faces.

If you’re a photographer who wants to get involved, contact Lisa. And if you want to adopt one of the featured animals, contact the shelters. Who wouldn’t want to wake up every morning to a face like this?

Diary | Social Feed x The Anthology + You!

Vancouver’s the biggest small town in the world. And you don’t have to take my word for it — one of the Real Housewives of Vancouver said — and I quote — “Six degrees of separation? In Vancouver it’s, like, two. And it should be legal to marry a first cousin here.”

Ummmm…anyway…Thursday’s Social Feed x The Anthology was proof that everybody in this city knows everybody in this city. Tickets for the dinner hosted by yours truly at the Irish Heather sold out faster than any Social Feed event to date (LOVE you guys!) and it was packed with creative types, design enthusiasts and fashion lovers like (clockwise from top left) Style Council’s Sam Baxter, Jon Becker (with whom I lecture at SFU’s Continuing Studies Program), articling student Annie Stewart, Dave Waterman, Aritzia’s Kelly Moss, AG Hair’s Sam Shamash, Larissa Dundon (my sis), and Bryce Dundon (my bro).

And the bloggarazzi! Clockwise from top left: Edelman PR’s Ashley Walden, A Fashion Love Affair’s Cara Jourdan, Miss Melissa’s Melissa Knight, A Beautiful Life’s Liv Hung, Jugni Style’s Manjot Bains, co-curator of the Museum of Vancouver’s exhibit BhangraMe Naveen Girn, photographer Maurice Li, Anthology contributor Erika Renfrew and Alicia Fashionista’s Alicia Quan.

I loved seeing all of your beautiful faces! Clockwise from top left: Art Institute student Marina Fernandes, Lyndsay Tilston of Tonic Apparel, in the black on the second photo from the top is HootSuite’s Ashley Jane Brookes, and that’s Dress For Success Vancouver board member Liz Sperandeo beside me in the picture on the bottom left. (Eep! I know I’m missing a few of your names — send me an email and I’ll post them promptly!)

I wore a dress by Parker and a vintage necklace I found at the Brooklyn Flea when I was in NYC — I’m told it’s a sample that was made in the 1960s but was never widely launched because it was so difficult to reproduce, which makes it extra special in my eyes. Was it made around the time Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra came out in 1963? I don’t know, but it definitely has an Egyptian influence.

We went a little giveaway crazy! Everyone went home with AG Hair’s Organic Extra Virgin Argan Miracle Oil (love the stuff!), one lucky guest slipped on a sterling silver ring by Vancouver jewelry designer Justine Brooks’ (was tempted to keep it for myself!) and a couple ladies went home with some Jason Wu for Target goodies. Speaking of which, Liz Sperandeo picked the winner of The Anthology’s Jason Wu for Target giveaway and it was…Katya P.! Congratulations!

The best part of the night? A portion of the ticket proceeds went to Dress For Success Vancouver. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Let’s do this again, friends. ‘Twas fun!

P.S. I’ll be posting more photos on The Anthology’s Facebook Diary so give it the old thumbs up!
