For the inaugural post, it’s only fitting that we turn to Kelly Wearstler’s My Vibe My Life.

kelly-wearstler-vibe-life

The interior designer turned designer designer balances over-the-top glamour with rock-and-roll cool so beautifully, I’m addicted to her aesthetic.

And I think you’ll also love the behind-the-scenes look at her designs in progress.

Style | Knit’s neat

Vintage shopping isn’t always about the weird and the wonderful (though there’s certainly plenty of that).

dog-and-vintage

It’s also about the classic and the ladylike. Like this made-in-Canada, midi-length knit skirt. It has a wonderful sheer quality that doesn’t quite translate in pictures but looks beautiful in person.

midi-skirt

Which brings up a really good point — always, always test your vintage dresses and skirts for the see-through-ness before leaving the house. So many of these gorgeous old pieces were made to wear with slips and it’s best to find that out before you arrive to a meeting with your editor.

prada-platform-espadrilles

You know what else is great to find out? How badly your lawn needs cutting. My Prada espadrilles have some serious platforms on them and the fact that they’re completely enveloped by the grass, well…

At least the beast doesn’t mind.

P.S. We’ve got some very exciting giveaways coming up so check back often!

Trippin’ | Rocking out at RockWater

I never want to leave this deck.

rockwater-balcony

It is one of the most beautiful points on the Sunshine Coast and it is all mine. At least for a few short days at RockWater Secret Cove Resort.

rockwater-tenthouse-suite

This isn’t your average cabin. In fact it isn’t a cabin at all – it’s one of RockWater’s famed tenthouse suites. Which means the walls are canvas. I keep forgetting this fact because I have a door with a lock on it, heated tile floors and a bathtub with a gazillion dollar view. But really, I might as well be outside.

rockwater-view-at-night

Even when I shut all the doors and windows at night I can hear the waves pounding on the bluff below me. Which reminds me how long it’s been since I’ve heard the ocean from my room. It’s the greatest thing on earth.

rockwater-resort-boardwalk

Here, the hallway is a 1,500-metre elevated boardwalk that winds its way through the trees.

west-coast-air-seaplane

The jet set travels by seaplane (thank you West Coast Air for a wild flight-seeing tour).

kelsey-and-jewel

And the transportation is four-legged instead of 4WD. (While I may have the Ralph Lauren equestrian look down pat, I have no idea how to ride a horse and Jewel could tell immediately. Just look at the expression on her face and tell me she isn’t judging me.)

malaspina-ranch

So what do you pack if you’re heading to RockWater? Resort casual clothes so you can feast on seafood in the renovated 1950s fishing lodge; bug spray so you can spend the whole evening out on your deck without the company of mosquitoes (and leave your super sweet Dove go fresh body wash at home); ear plugs in case the wind picks up and the waves start crashing; and a sleep mask because the sun rises early and floods your tenthouse with light.

rockwater-resort

Oh, and plan to have a massage in RockWater’s Spa Without Walls. It’s a heavenly open-air spa right beside the sea so you’re listening to real waves and real birds chirping instead of Seaside Soundscapes Vol. 7.

Goodbye, little cabin on a cliff. I’ll miss you!

Interview | Wear short dresses! And other fashion tips from The Anthology

vancouver-based-fashion-expert-kelsey-dundon-at-banana-republic-talks-styles-to-suit-different-figures

Summer means dresses. So I stopped by Banana Republic to talk to the Province’s Dana Gee about picking the perfect dress for your body type (hourglass, curvy, boyish, petite, pear-shaped, you name it). Take a look…

And if you want more tips and tricks for dressing your body type, you’ll find them in the print edition of the Province (which I guarantee my mother is circulating throughout her office as I type this).

Thank you, Dana, for making the interview so much fun!

Beauty | Browing Out

Eyebrow sculptors Bombay Brow Bar just opened a second location in Kits so The Anthology’s resident (and pregnant) beauty Kylie Kumar put her brows to the test.

Being six months pregnant there are a lot of things I can’t control: my waistline, my freakish hormone shifts, and my intense desire for Salt & Vinegar chips. That said, I can control my eyebrows.

bombay-brow-kits

I started my day with thin, unhappy brows.

But after my appointment, which included brow gossip (a consultation), a step-by-step plan, painless threading, eyebrow massage with rosewater gel and brow filling, I feel sophisticated and polished (even “glowing” if you will).

I’ll never let my brows be unhappy again.

Playlist | Kid Cudi at Deer Lake Park

Call it mellow.

kid-cudi-deer-lake-park

Kid Cudi plays sit-outside-on-a-summer-evening kind of music. And there are few spots in the city better suited to do that than Deer Lake Park.

So in the um, pursuit of happiness, Vancouver-based photographer Braden Paul headed to the show to photograph Kid Cudi for The Anthology.

And his shots make me wish I were there.

P.S. You’ll find more Deer Lake Park events (Black Keys!) here and details on the annual Symphony in the Park here.

P.P.S. Take a look at Braden Paul’s shots from Sasquatch Festival — the artists, the style, and the love of my life.

Beauty | Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with Estée Lauder’s Alan Pan

It’s 8:00 am on Monday morning and Estée Lauder makeup artist Alan Pan has just flown into Vancouver from London. And I, well, I drove all of ten minutes to meet him downtown at the Metropolitan Hotel. But still, it’s early.

alan-pan-estee-lauder1

So naturally my first question for this makeup maverick is: what can I do to look bright-eyed and bushy tailed so early in the morning?

“Start with your skin,” says the energetic Pan. “We wake up looking dull, so skin is always the first priority.” He recommends Estée Lauder’s soon-to-be-released Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator because it reflects the light and “Instantly picks you up.”

estee-lauder-model

“Then focus on definition – a good mascara, a touch of gloss for a radiant, illuminating effect,” Pan says.

“And avoid browns.” Wait, what? Brown has been my go-to eye colour for as long as I can remember. I’m not alone, apparently. “A lot of women choose browns because they’re warm, natural,” he says. “But skin looks dull first thing in the morning so you need a touch of colour.”

alan-pan-makeup-artist

And if you’re applying makeup before you’ve had your double shot of espresso, Pan recommends starting with darker shades of shadow. “You’ll make fewer mistakes that way,” he says.

Turning to me with a tube of their upcoming Idealist Cooling Eye Illuminator in his hand, he asks “Can I attack you with this?” Well, when you put it like that…

alan-pan-kelsey-dundon

“You’ll look like you’ve slept for 25 hours,” he says, as he pats the serum under my eyes and sweeps it over my lids. Its fancy patented tip actually does feel cool as a cucumber. And my eyes look brighter, a little sparklier, like I might actually be a morning person.

P.S. Add The Anthology on Facebook, sleepyhead.

After | The printed pants

You’d never guess that these shorts…

printed-shorts-after

Used to look like these pants

printed-pants-pre-alterations

It was almost a shame to chop those up.

vintage-printed-pants-tailored

But I got over it fast.

after-printed-vintage-pants-converted-short

Because I’ll be wearing these shorts all summer long. If we get a summer, that is. (Come on, Vancouver! It’s mid-June for crying out loud.)
